Environment, Sustainable & Governance (ESG) Initiatives

Challenge timeframe: 1 November 2022 to 28 February 2023

SA Health is seeking ideas to increase its commitment to support ESG initiatives within its contracts.

Our context

SA Health intends to use its key strategic contracts to create sustainable long-term value for both people and the planet. The department has an opportunity to support positive Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) initiatives during its procurement activities which may include supporting suppliers who have embedded social benefit strategies within their business model.

Strategies may include commitments and initiatives to:

  • increase investment in the South Australian economy;
  • implement achievable environmental and sustainability targets; and
  • support inclusivity including training and opportunities for Aboriginal people, disadvantaged people and minority communities, and/or support youth traineeships and opportunities for the long term unemployed, older South Australian’s or others within the not-for-profit sector.

What are we looking for?

CAMPAIGN CHALLENGE QUESTION:

How can SA Health more actively and appropriately support ESG commitments and initiatives within its contracts? What measures could we consider embedding within our contracts to ensure real and positive social benefit outcomes for both the people of South Australia and the environment?

The forthcoming food and beverage supply contract will soon be advertised on the SA Tenders and Contracts website. The contract sources food and beverage items to service (deliver to) SA Health’s Local Health Network across the State and other SA Government facilities as required (e.g. Correctional Services) and is an excellent example of the type of contract SA Health may use to support broad ESG initiatives which will benefit the South Australian community and economy into the future.

What are we hoping to achieve?

SA Health sources a vast array of goods, services and equipment. The department is keen to embed ESG commitments during the procurement stage (tender evaluation) and to measure suppliers’ achievements against these commitments throughout the relevant contract term. In addition, SA Health will seek to work in partnership with its suppliers on an ongoing basis to continue to explore new ESG initiatives through a contract’s life cycle, with a view to extend initiatives across other future SA Health contracts.
